3D Scanning Resolution Is Not a Guarantee of Fit

Understand the difference between scan resolution, dimensional accuracy and CAD reconstruction before using a mesh as a design reference.

First published · Updated

The original title of this guide referred to a 0.2 mm scanner resolution. That number should not be read as a current service specification, a guaranteed dimensional accuracy or a promise that a replacement will fit.

Resolution and accuracy answer different questions

Resolution describes how closely detail can be represented; accuracy concerns agreement with the real geometry. A dense mesh is not automatically an accurate measurement of every feature. Scanner specifications also depend on how the manufacturer defines and tests them. Artec’s explanation of accuracy, precision and resolution describes these distinctions.

For a design project, begin with the features and interfaces that matter. Decide what evidence is needed for those dimensions instead of assuming that a headline scanner number establishes them.

What a surface scan can contribute

A scan can provide a reference for complex curves, as-built geometry and a physical part’s current condition. That current condition includes wear, damage and deformation. The design work must distinguish what should be preserved from what needs reconstruction.

Ask the scanning provider about access to hidden features, reflective or transparent surfaces, surface preparation and any features that may need separate measurements. The right approach depends on the actual part and capture method.

A mesh and a CAD model are different deliverables

STL and OBJ are mesh formats. They can record a surface without defining the intended dimensions or editable design features of a component.

CAD reconstruction uses the reference information to develop the geometry needed for the project. An exchange file such as STEP does not automatically include a native feature history, inspection record or a complete tolerance scheme. Specify what needs to be delivered and checked.

When another reference may be more useful

A simple part may be practical to model from measurements. A damaged part may need drawings or mating components to recover missing information. A scan can still contribute without being the sole source of truth.

Record uncertain features and the basis for each design decision. A visually complete model should not hide a missing measurement or an inferred interface.

Prepare a useful inquiry

Send photographs, approximate dimensions, known material and surface finish, and a description of the required result. Explain whether you need a mesh record, CAD reconstruction or a modification. Confirm any cleaning or surface treatment with the provider before altering a delicate part.
