Manthey GT3 RS Rear-View Camera System

Rear visibility restored on an aero-converted 992 GT3 RS — a scan-fit camera housing that reads as factory, developed through 15+ rapid iterations and now a 9OneFour product.

The problem

The Manthey aero conversion replaces the 992 GT3 RS rear glass with a carbon fibre panel and fin, eliminating rearward visibility for street driving. No OEM or aftermarket solution restored continuous rear view in a way that fit the car.

Constraints

Sustained 250+ km/h speeds, vibration, UV and direct sun. Minimal, precisely placed modification to a six-figure car. Visual integration with the Manthey aero package without compromising its aerodynamic function.

Development approach

3D scanned the rear deck to design against real geometry, evaluated mounting locations, then iterated the housing through 15+ physical prototypes test-fit on the car before locking a production design in glass-fibre reinforced nylon.

This case study covers version 1 of the kit. V2 is the version available today — its write-up is coming soon.

Designing against the real car

We started by 3D scanning the rear deck lid to capture the mounting surface, the surrounding contours, and the relationship to the central fin. Working against real geometry rather than approximations let the housing be designed as a conformal part that sits inside the compound curvature of the bodywork.

Several mounting locations were evaluated against visibility, installation complexity, cable routing, visual integration and aerodynamic exposure: the licence plate area, rear bumper, external brackets, and the deck lid beneath the fin. The deck lid won — the best rearward perspective, centreline symmetry, clean cable routing and minimal visual disruption.

Iterating until it belonged

The design went through 15+ rapid iterations, each made and physically test-fit on the vehicle. Small changes in angle or section thickness have an outsized effect on both perceived fit and function, and CAD alone doesn’t resolve them — physical validation does.

The final housing is made in glass-fibre reinforced nylon for heat resistance, stiffness and long-term exterior service, then finished in automotive clear coat. A drill guide places the mounting points in the deck lid exactly where they need to be.

The interior, V1 to V2

In V1 the rear-view display sat on an aftermarket mirror mount. We 3D scanned the mount and surrounding interior and designed a custom shroud so it looked like it belonged in the cabin. V2 keeps the same display but adapts it to the factory Porsche mirror mount, with the OEM shroud left in place.

From one car to a product

The finished system restores continuous rear visibility without compromising the Manthey aero package — and it reads as a component that belongs on the vehicle, not something added afterward. The production-ready geometry is now sold as the Manthey GT3 RS Rear-View Camera Kit.

Validation

Every iteration was test-fit on the vehicle to settle camera angle, section thickness, cable exit, clearance to the fin, and visual balance from multiple viewing angles.

The outcome

A complete rear-view camera system that restores continuous rearward visibility with minimal modification and reads as an OEM-integrated component. The design became the Manthey GT3 RS Rear-View Camera Kit, sold by 9OneFour.
